C Joseph Smith
In addressing the Relief Society in Nauvoo, Joseph Smith discussed
such gifts, indicating that “no matter who believeth, these signs, such as
healing the sick, casting out devils, etc. should follow all that believe,
whether male or female.” Women exercised all these gifts, particularly the
healing of the sick. Though such dramatic manifestations of the Spirit were
certainly not part of every gathering of Mormon women, they seem to have had
widespread impact on sisters through the end of the nineteenth century and
during the early years of the twentieth century.
