The establishment of Camp Floyd thirty-six miles
southwest of Salt Lake City in 1858 by Captain Albert Sidney Johnston brought
the Pony Express mail and better continental stage service to the valley making
it more profitable for traders and merchants to establish themselves in Utah.
“Among these were some Jews, one of the first being Nicholas Siegfried
Ransohoff. There is evidence that Ransohoff brought a load of freight to Camp
Floyd in 1858, for his name is on the list of Masons there in April 1859.” The
first Masonic Lodge in Utah was established in Camp Floyd and was operating in
1859. Ransohoff later built a building on the west side of Main Street in Salt
Lake City. This solidly built stone building was purchased by the Church in
1867 for $75,000 and became the site of the first ZCMI store.
