St. Louis flooded
William Clayton
recorded the following:
As
I was walking along Front Street, St. Louis I saw a man engaged cutting a stone
monument. I was amazed to see these words already cut on the monument, viz.
‘Highwater June 27th, 1844’, that was the day when this generation
rejected the Prophet of God, when he and his brother Hyrum, the patriarch, were
murdered at Carthage Jail by a wicked mob, and this was the day when the waters
over-flowed the Missouri at the highest, when the Front Street of St. Louis was
covered eight feet deep with the flood.
