(C) Fish
Phinehas [Richards] sought the permission
of the council for a fishing business with the idea in mind to provide food for
poor Saints. When Saints from England and Scotland arrived at Winter Quarters,
they were able to provide fish for the immigrants. Phinehas writes the
following at the conclusion of the business venture: “I formed a company of
five old fishermen and built a boat and commenced operation; in a few weeks I
had distributed among the bishops 7400 weight of good fish. The operation was
stayed by high water, the captain drowned, and the boat lost.”
