“Everything looks so gloomy and lonesome”

Image result for dreary landscape

According to the autobiography of early member, Lewis Barney, why did the landscape of Illinois look so “gloomy and lonesome?”

a.      The desertion of Nauvoo after the Saints left the city

b.      The feeling around Nauvoo after Joseph and Hyrum were martyred

c.       What Missouri looked like after the Saints expulsion

d.      What Commerce, Illinois looked like prior to the Saints arrival to build the city of Nauvoo

Yesterday’s answer:

a.      Stephen Markham

On June 6, 1846, a movement started at Warsaw to drive out the remaining Mormons at the point of the sword. The mob militia assembled at Golden Point for this purpose, but at this time it was rumored that Stephen Markham had returned to Nauvoo with several hundred armed men. As Markham’s name was a terror among his enemies, the mob hastily disbanded. Markham had returned to Nauvoo to remove some Church property but had brought no more than a few teamsters and wagons for that purpose.
