Yesterday’ s answer:

The
feeling around Nauvoo after Joseph and Hyrum where martyred.
The following is in relation to the
desertion of Carthage, Ill., after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith.
“As soon as this was done the whole country
was deserted; men, women and children fled for their lives, not taking time to
shut their doors after them. Stores were left standing open and there was gloom
cast over the country, so much that strangers passing through the country spoke
of it. As I was out looking, I met a stranger. He ask me what was the matter.
That everything looks so gloomy and lonesome. I told him that last evening (27th
of June, 1844) Joseph Smith the Prophet and his brother Hyrum were murdered at
the Carthage Illinois, and the people here all fled and left the country and
when the blood of a prophet is shed it has a tendency to cast a gloom over the
country.”
