Yesterday’s answer:
A Stand on three legs
Oxen were fully mature cattle that were large and strong, weighing
from 800 to 2,500 pounds. They were slow-moving (covering about three miles an
hour), but they were stronger than horses or mules and could subsist on a much
poorer diet. Unlike horses, oxen were not able to stand on three legs, and
without the aid of a shoeing harness, they had to be roped to the ground in
order to be shod. Then someone would have to sit on their necks to prevent them
from getting up during the process. There are only two original ox lifts know
to be in existence, and the Provo Pioneer Village is very fortunate to have one
of them.
