Samuel Brannan, an energetic Elder of the Church in the New York branch, was appointed to take charge of the Saints who should go to California by water. The ship “Brooklyn” was finally chartered at a cost of $1,200 a month for the journey. Over three hundred Saints asked for places. Two hundred and thirty-eight were finally taken at a total cost for passage of $50 each.
