We often hear about
Samuel Smith’s first missionary labors. We have been taught that he was the
first missionary in this dispensation and that on his first mission he felt he
was unsuccessful, since he place only a few copies of the Book of Mormon. Not only
did he have a difficult time handing them out, he was equally unsuccessful at
trying to get the one Book of Mormon back from a Mr. John Greene (thank
heaven). Samuel tried five times to retrieve the Book of Mormon. I say thank
heaven only because it is this Book of Mormon which converted John Greene,
Heber C. Kimball, and Brigham Young. This indirectly was responsible for
literally tens of thousands and maybe even hundreds of thousands of baptisms to
follow throughout the years. I think Samuel did alright.
Speech of Brigham
Young delivered August 8, 1852 at the Tabernacle
Journal of
Discourses, 3:91.
