(C) The bishopric and Acting Teachers
For many
years, the methods for blessing and passing the sacrament varied from ward to
ward. Often, bishops personally administered the sacrament, both in their own
wards and in the settlement-wide sacrament meetings. One bishop noted in 1874
that “at 2 PM I administered the sacrament in the New Tabernacle assisted by my
2 council[ors] and [Acting] Teachers.” Some wards blessed bread and water
first, then passed both at the same time. In other wards, bishops decided “to
bless the bread and water at the Sacrament according to the universal custom”
instead of “blessing both before distributing either.”
