Winter Quarters, Nebraska: While
awaiting the arrival of oncoming wagon trains, construction of a skip or ferry
to cross the river [Missouri River], and news of Brigham Young’s next move, the
Whitneys busied themselves feeding and watching over the large cattle herds,
washing clothes, watching the Pottawattamie Indians from afar, and what must
have been a luxury—picking strawberries. “The berries look so delicately
tempting,” Helen Mar recalled after a winter of dried flour, parched corn, and
crackers, that “I kept reaching for them till I felt helpless. . . . We picked
berries till dusk, when we returned to camp. We had filled all our pails and
pans full and eaten till we were clogged.”
