Fun with a purpose

Joseph Smith appreciated recreation. He understood the need for not only himself and family, but also his people. At the same time he understood the seriousness of life. What did Joseph like to do after a good game of “Town ball” (predecessor to baseball)?

a.      Attend his Sabbath meetings

b.      At the end of the game, take all to help someone in need

c.       Do baptisms for the dead in the Mississippi River

d.      Labor on Nauvoo streets

Yesterday’s answer:

a.      Sparking

At the new LDS town of “Wyoming,” above Nebraska City, the group met up with the emigrants who arrived by riverboat. On the westward journey they held several dances, and the young people were getting acquainted: “[July 9] At camp, sparking [flirting] is extensive this evening. . . . [July 19] The boys and girls are heavy on the spark this evening.”
