In June 1832, Peter Whitmer Jr. rented a room from Lilburn W. Boggs, the future governor, and operated a tailor shop. Mary Elizabeth Rollins, teenage niece of A. Sidney Gilbert, worked for Whitmer and stitched the facing of Lt. Gov. Boggs’s inaugural suit.
