With gold
dust coming in from California as tithing, in the spring of 1849 the First
Presidency ordered minting equipment and supplies from the East. These arrived
in September, and “coinage began” that month. The mint was a small adobe
building that stood in the north side of South Temple Street, approximately
where the Joseph Smith Memorial Building stands today. Under John Kay’s
direction, the mint produced $2.50, $5.00, $10.00, and $20.00 gold pieces.
