The public concept of suppressed womanhood in Utah was so exaggerated in the East that lawmakers went the extraordinary extreme of appropriating $112,000 to construct a magnificent industrial home as the refuge for polygamous women and children. It was assumed that many would be desperate to flee form their tyrannical masters, once asylum was available.

The “home” opened on Fifth East in Salt Lake City in June 1889 but was a ghastly failure, averaging only seven inmates, virtually all of whom were nonpolygamous paupers. This building later became the Ambassador Club.
