B A U.S. Marshall seeking polygamists
From the life of Edwin Dilworth Woolley Jr.: A niece
wrote: “There was no hotel in Kanab, but Uncle Dee had the best home in town. .
. . Ironically, during the ‘Raid’ of the ‘80s, a U.S. Deputy Marshal was
stricken ill in Kanab and was nursed back to health in . . . the home of
the man he had come to arrest. During [those raids], he moved his wife Flora to
Pipe Spring, Arizona, which [had become] a rendezvous for plural wives, and
many of their children were born there. He escaped many times but finally fell
into their hands. In October of 1887 he was arrested, and after a preliminary
hearing, . .. . was acquitted. . . . In September 1890, he was arrested and
taken before a grand jury, . . . but the case was dismissed for lack of
evidence, as Flora was still in Arizona, and they were unable to get her as a
material witness.
