Yesterday’s answer:
A Bread
From the life of Sarah Wilkinson Buchanan: Sarah was
born at Mt. Pisgah, Iowa, October 16, 1847. Her parents started across the
Plains in the Silas Richards Company Wagon Train, July 10, 1849. While crossing
the Plains her mother died and was buried in her feather tick along the way.
After her death Sarah was taken by a family named Taylor.
She lived through the famine. They lived on herbs, which was
mainly pig weeds. Once they ground some oats and made bread. Sarah got one
biscuit: it was the first bread she had tasted for months. She said she would
never forget how that bead scratched as she swallowed it; but it was the best
and the sweetest she had ever eaten.
