From the life of Sarah Goode Marshall Chadwick:
When Sarah was young, she worked out as a maid. She was married to
Thomas Marshall when she heard the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints.
Her husband was much opposed to her association
with the Church and she suffered abuse at his hands until his death, in 1854.
His family would not allow her to inherit from his estate.
Sarah worked hard as a maid during the day and
made, kid gloves at night, until she earned enough to bring her family to
America. They boarded the ship, “Samuel Curling,” and sailed from Liverpool,
England, to Boston.
They continued by rail to Iowa City, where
preparations were under way for the long journey across the Plains in the first
handcart company.
Edmund Ellsworth was reluctant to take a widow
with six children. She replied that she would beat him there and became the
first member of that handcart company to enter Salt Lake Valley, thus
fulfilling her statement.
