Yesterday’s answer:
B   Hawaii
On August 20, 1851, three more missionaries arrived [Hawaii], accompanied by their wives. One of them, Phillip B. Lewis, had been sent to succeed Clark as president of the mission. With him were Francis A. Hammond and Joseph Woodbury. The arrival of these men, along with the others who joined them, gave fresh momentum to the work. By 1853 branches were functioning on all of the inhabited islands with others being organized into conferences, one on each of the smaller islands and more on the larger ones.
It was then deemed advisable to establish a gathering place for the Hawaiian saints on one of the islands, rather than encouraging them to migrate to Utah. Therefore, a tract of land was purchased on the island of Lanai to which agricultural implements, building materials, seeds, etc. were transported by small boats, and then carried from shore to village on the shoulders of natives. Ephraim Green was placed in charge of the settlement called “Palawai,” and cattle were transported in scows (flat-bottomed boats) to the amazement of the natives.
