When the Jex family emigrated from England to America in 1854, their voyage could definitely be considered a nightmare from start to finish. What one thing didn’t happen on the ship as they crossed the Atlantic?

From the life of Melinda Keller Boren:   In 1839, a Mormon missionary came to Southern Illinois. Coleman and Melinda were interested and later joined the church. They receive their endowment in the Nauvoo Temple, 3 Feb, 1846. Melinda heard about polygamy and told her husband to take another wife. From Nauvoo they went to Mt. Pisgah, Iowa and then crossed the Plains in 1851 under the direction of church officials but not in a regular company.

In 1854, they had a good crop of wheat and their bin was full. Travelers going to California offered $24 a bushel for the wheat but they refused to sell. They sold it to the Saints for $3 or gave it to the poor who could not pay. Many said they were saved from starvation by the wheat from the Boren family’s bin and that more wheat came out of their bin than had gone in. Melinda was honest in all her dealings and faithful to her church.
