From the life of Edwin Dilworth Woolley Sr.:   One day while traveling “without purse or scrip,” a significant event occurred. While walking about the countryside, Edwin reached a toll gate where ministers or preachers were allowed to pass through free of charge. Upon stating that he was a preacher, he was allowed to go on his way but had not journeyed far when, on the road behind him, he heard the clatter of horses’ hooves.

Turning, he observed two men approaching at a rapid speed. Upon being overtaken by the riders, one of them roughly placed a hand on his shoulder and declared with an oath, “you are no d---d preacher, and you have got to go back with us and not only pay for your fare but a fine was well!”

Edwin informed them that he was a preacher, and if they would procure a hall and furnish an audience, he would show them whether he was or not. That seemed to satisfy the men. A hall was provided and notices of the meeting were posted. In the meantime, Edwin was held in custody. A large congregation gathered, attracted, no doubt, by the novelty of the occasion. In any event, Edwin was so pleased with the reception he received in Strausberg that he remained in the vicinity for a time, converting some. Upon his return to Nauvoo, Edwin engaged in the mercantile business.
