Yesterday’s

A To knit
wounds together
From the life of Elvira Pamela Mills Cox: In the fall of 1849, Elvira and Orville were
called to colonize Sanpete Valley. Always helping others, Elvira was set apart
as a midwife.
She brought two pounds of sugar across the Plains with
her. It was used for medicinal purposes only. She had some surgical needles and
white silk thread for sewing up wounds. Since the pioneers had so little sugar
to eat, wounds would not heal or knit. Elvira put pounded sugar and rosin in a wound
to make it knit. She used peach leaves and bark from young peach shoots to make
a tea for sore throats.
Elvira used Yarrow for headaches, hoar hound for colds,
peppermint for stomach ache, rhubarb root for constipation, purdock roots for boils,
and other herbs for various remedies.
