From the first 1837 mission to England: In mid October the elders went before the Court of Quarter Sessions in Preston and obtained licenses to preach. At first they had not thought it necessary, but after consulting with friends, they realized that it was at least wisdom, for it was actually a requirement under the law. One of these friends, an attorney, was the son of the Reverend John Richards of Walkerfold, and it was he who helped them get their licenses. Heber [Kimball] later discovered to his surprise, that there were few licensed preachers in Preston, a fact that he turned to his advantage. “When they abused me I told them if they did not cease their abuse I would see the laws put in force . . . and this generally silenced them.”
