From the life of Orson Pratt:   In 1867 Professor Pratt became a member of the faculty of the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah). A gifted teacher, he could hold the attention of a group of students in a lecture on history, and in the following hour he was able to take the same students into the realm of science. In 1851 two large globes, one a celestial and the other a terrestrial, were hauled over the plains for the university and were used by Professor Pratt in his classes in astronomy and geography. He obtained many scientific instrument for the university, including a Dolland telescope was used for years in all of Professor Pratt’s astronomical classes.

A little adobe and wood astronomical observatory was built for Orson Pratt on the temple block in 1869. It was from this observatory that the lunar observations for ht Salt Lake Temple’s moonstones were made in 1878.
