While serving during the second mission to England in 1839, Elder George A. Smith made comment of whose beds, stating that they were better than what half the population of London slept on?
a.                  The Elder’s beds
b.                  The Queen’s horses beds
c.                   The clergy’s beds
d.                  The Saint’s beds
Yesterday’s answer:
C   The missionaries could not be self-supporting
In reference to the mission to French Polynesia: In addition to Louisa’s [Pratt] and Frances’s [Pratt, daughter of Louisa and Addison] occasional unhappiness, weightier factors combined to bring an end to the mission, such as the missionaries having difficulty keeping their promise to the French government that the mission would be self-supporting and not rely on the islanders for help. (The couples that left early to return to Utah had failed to enlist financial support for their mission.) A more difficult problem, however, arose when the French government no longer prohibited the “heathen” dances and allowed the sale of liquor to the locals. The missionaries understood that they could not continue to be successful under the changed circumstances, and they decided to go home with the hope of returning to the islands in the future.
