Hendricks struggled to see her son leave the day the Mormon Battalion marched
out of Winter Quarters. This so affected her that she could not eat her
breakfast. In her journal she mentions that if she never saw him again, she would
be able to recognize him in the resurrection, how?

large number of other Negroes are known to have been in subsequent pioneer
companies coming to the valley as servants accompanying southern families. One
pioneer company of Mississippi Saints of 1848 lists 57 “white persons” and 34
“colored persons.” In some cases the colored people were baptized along with
their owners; in other cases they were accompanying the family as servants or
slave. Many of these Blacks eventually left Utah and went to live in California
which was free territory. Hark Lay and Oscar Crosby belonged to this latter
group.
