Yesterday’s
answer:
A Dead livestock from
drinking bad water
As
the trail continued southwest toward Independence Rock, good water was rare.
Sometimes they found water, but the water wasn’t fit to drink by man or beast,
which was the case at a place called Bad Slough. Of this area, one pioneer
recorded: “Through the alkali belt, east of South Pass, their losses in cattle
were enormous. Many of the men would pay no attention to the warning of the
Saints, not to let their cattle drink water strongly impregnated with Saleratus.
. . As the result more than 2,000 carcasses of oxen lay strewn along the road
in the alkali district, and the offensive smell made it almost impossible to
travel in the vicinity.”

of the Trail (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, 1997), 12.
