B From a favorite Spanish book that he read
In
reference to the Gardo House: There are
two theories as to why Brigham Young named the home the “Gardo House.” The
first, according to his daughter Clarissa, was, “Father was very fond of giving
names to all of his homes, and this one was named . . . from a Spanish book
that he particularly enjoyed.” The other theory was that the name was chosen when
one of Brigham’s sons commented that the house seemed to tower over the
neighboring homes as if it were on guard and that the name “Gardo” would be
appropriate. The first one is most likely true, since the home was named in
1873 during the beginning phase of its construction.
