Brigham
Young began making plans for his official residence near the end of his life.
The location he selected was on the corner, directly south of the Beehive
House. He purchased the property from one of his fathers-in-law, Colonel A. P.
Rockwood, who had acquired it a year of two after the pioneers first entered
the valley. But since Utahns had no legal property rights until the year 1869,
Young did not receive clear title to it until it was conveyed to him by Mayor
Daniel H. Wells on January 1, 1873.
