Riding in a wagon while crossing the plains
From the life of Margaret Powell Betts: Margaret, the second daughter in the Powell
family, was stricken with cholera when five years old and given up to die, but
her father blessed her and promised that she would grow to be a useful woman in
Zion. Soon after her eighth birthday, they sailed from Liverpool and were six
weeks getting to Boston; they traveled by train and boat to Iowa City, then
crossed the Plains by handcart. When Brigham young sent wagons to meet these
weary pioneers and help them into the Valley, she refused to ride, saying, “I
have walked this far and I want to walk all the way.”
