The first company of pioneers to make the journey west
contained, besides the men, three women and two children. Of the men in the
company, there were, according to Orson F. Whitney, three non-Mormons who had
cast in their lot with the Saints. The three non-LDS men of the first company
of pioneers were Oscar Crosby and Hark Lay who were Negro slaves, and Stephen
Kelsey. The two black men belonged to converts William Crosby and William Lay
and were sent ahead to Salt Lake Valley by their owners to build homes for
their masters who would be coming west in later pioneer companies. The third
non-member in the first company was sixteen year old white male, Stephen Kelsey.
He was not a member of the Church at the beginning of the journey but was
baptized the day after the arrival of the company in the Salt Lake valley.
