Yesterday’s
answer:
A.
That the church would receive the same
persecution in Illinois as it did in Missouri
Upon learning of these outrages, the New York Tribune printed, “We begin
almost to fear that the terrible sense of cruelty, devastation of peaceful
homes and indiscriminate hunting down of men, women and children, which
disgraced Missouri a few years since, during the expulsion of the Mormons from
that State, are to be re enacted in Illinois.” Within days the Tompkins (New York) Democrat reported,
“A battle had been fought between the Mormons and anti-Mormons casting a cannon
in “St. Louis, so large that it will require all the powder and lead that can
be manufactured for five years to come to charge it once.” With such unfounded
rumors circulating throughout the country, John Taylor admonished subscribers,
“Under all the trials of life stand fast! Would you wish to live without a
trial? . . . Without trial you cannot guess at your own strength. Men do not
learn to swim upon a table. They must go into deep water and buffet the
surges.”
Susan Easton Black, Nauvoo Neighbor, The Latter-day
Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1843-1845, BYU Studies, Vol. 51, Number 3, 2012, 155.
