(D) The Utah-Idaho State line
The
following from the life of Joshua Midgley, born October 15, 1832: Joshua was
called on a mission in December of 1856 to northern Utah, traveling from
Centerville to the state line.
At the time he returned home, the priesthood
was advocating plural marriage, providing a man could afford to support another
wife and had secured the consent of his present spouse. Joshua consulted with his
bishop and secured a recommend which was approved by Brigham Young. But Jemima
withheld her consent, hence the matter was permanently dropped by Joshua. Later
in his life, when he had become reasonable well-to-do and was in responsible
positions in his ward and stake, some of the brethren continued to urge him to
take another wife. He considered the matter settled by Jemima’s position, but
the elders talked to her about it, urging her to pray until she received a
response from the Lord. She assured them, “Well, Brothers, I have prayed to the
Lord over and over again and asked for guidance. So far he has said nothing to
me.” This ended the efforts of the elders.
