Yesterday’s answer:
a.
Called them on missions
Those who
questioned Brigham Young’s politics were known as the Godbeites, because they
were led by and William S. Godbe. They
considered themselves free thinkers and intellectuals. The Utah Magazine, founded in 1869,
became their means for stating their opinions.
When the Church
leaders tried everything in their power to reclaim these men, at the School of
the Prophets, nothing but bad feelings ensued.
Church leaders went so far as to call some of these men on missions, and
of course they were rejected. These men became even more vocal in their public
cry, which ultimately led to their excommunication. In 1870 they started their
own church, named the Church of Zion, and made their periodical into a daily anti-Mormon
newspaper, the Salt Lake Tribune.
