Yesterday’s answer:

When the Saints first arrived in the Commerce area, now Nauvoo, a Mr. White offered to sell his farm to Joseph Smith for $2500, with the terms of sale being $500 down and the remainder due one year after the time of the sale.  Joseph consulted with some of the leaders of the Church on their feelings of the pending land purchase. The brethren basically stated, “We can’t buy it, for we lack the money.”

The Prophet, once he understood how they felt, took out his purse and gave each one a half dollar until he did not have any money left to give out. The Prophet then said: “Now you all have money, and I have none; but the time will come when I will have money and you will have none!”

He then said to Bishop Knight, “You go back and buy the farm!” The deal was closed and the next day the brethren and Joseph visited Mr. White to sign the papers. Joseph did not have the $500 and was not entirely certain how he would receive the money that he needed to close the deal. Joseph bowed his head as if in prayer. Just then a man came to the door and inquired for Mr. Smith. Joseph went to the door and the stranger identified himself as a land speculator and was interested in purchasing land from him. Joseph made a sweep of his arm stating that this was his land, however, the stranger said he did not have time to inspect the land but would give Joseph Smith whatever money he needed.  Joseph asked for $500 which the stranger counted out of his sack of gold and gave Joseph an additional $100.

After this transpired, Joseph laughed at the brethren and said: “You trusted in money; but I trusted in God. Now I have money and you have none.”
