A wood stove drying baptismal clothing
In William Clayton’s journal of February 9, 1846 he states: At
the office packing. At 3 ½ the Temple was seen on fire. Women carrying water.
Apparently, an
overheated stove pipe was the cause of the fire in the Nauvoo Temple. The stove
was used to dry out clothing. The fire was easily put out. This fire was large
enough that those crossing the Mississippi River on their way west could see
the fire.
