“I’d Rather Have my Tongue Torn Out”

Eight-year old Eunice Billings states that she saw the Prophet Joseph and then ran home. In her journal she later stated that she rather have “Had my tongue torn out.” What caused her to say this?

a.      She didn’t want to be persecuted

b.      She didn’t want to get in trouble with her mother since her mother didn’t care for the Prophet.

c.       If word got out, everyone would know that she skipped school

d.      The prophet was in hiding and didn’t want her to give him away

Yesterday’s answer:

a.      A wood stove drying baptismal clothing

In William Clayton’s journal of February 9, 1846 he states: At the office packing. At 3 ½ the Temple was seen on fire. Women carrying water.

Apparently, an overheated stove pipe was the cause of the fire in the Nauvoo Temple. The stove was used to dry out clothing. The fire was easily put out. This fire was large enough that those crossing the Mississippi River on their way west could see the fire.
