Yesterday’s answer:
b. Patriarchal blessings
It was a
common practice for Saints to obtain patriarchal blessings. Patriarchs often
traveled in circuits so people could receive their blessings. Recipients paid a
small fee to reimburse the patriarch for his traveling expenses. Sometimes
Saints received two or more patriarchal blessing in their lifetimes. Within
three weeks of arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1850, for example, Martha Spence
Heywood sought for and received her blessing from Patriarch John Smith. Three
years later, she received a second blessing from a Brother Cazier. Many, like
Sarah Dugard Crowther, received a patriarchal blessing in Nauvoo and a second
one in Utah.
