During
Brigham Young’s presidency, leaders provided Utah Saints with three
opportunities to be rebaptized: during the consecration movement in 1854, the
“Mormon Reformation” in 1856-57, and the united order movement in the
mid-1870s. On these occasions, Saints were asked to search their souls and
repent sufficiently to be worthy of being baptized once again. During the
reformation, almost all adult Saints were rebaptized. For example, some five
hundred Saints in the Kaysville Ward—nearly every member of the ward— accepted
rebaptism. During the united order campaign, leaders judged that the members
seemed to be in a “stupor” and needed to be awakened through renewing their covenants.
The Twelve set the example by being rebaptized and preached the necessity of
the “elders renewing their covenants with the Almighty by rebaptism”; women
were to do the same.
