Yesterday’s answer:
(C) That he would sail his condemned ship one
more time
When Maria
Gill Clayfield arrived in Liverpool to take passage on the sailing vessel, she,
along with the other passengers, found that the only ship available was one
which had been condemned and was not seaworthy. When the immigration officers
saw that a number of people wanted to come to America, they asked the captain
of the condemned ship if he would consent to make one more voyage in his ship.
The captain asked who the people were. When he was told they were Mormons, he
agreed to take them, saying that he felt nothing would happen to them as long
as there were Mormons aboard.
After the Saints arrived safely in America the
following was recorded on August 7, 1868: August 7 was a fine morning. The
Saints got their luggage and were given instructions before going ashore. They
had been on the ocean six weeks and three days. It is interesting to note that
the ship was loaded with cotton for the return trip to England, but on the
third day out she sank in the ocean.
