 New York born Orley Dewight Bliss was personally called “to gather the poor” in 1863 and became a down-and-back missionary. Orley records in his diary many details of the trip, including the following:

“Wed. 18^th May. Traveled 12 miles and camped on Sweetwater 2 miles above the upper crossing. It hailed and blew very hard. . . . Here we had a game of ball this afternoon.”
