The
Mormon Battalion of 1846 is not the first time that the government has asked
the Mormons to supply men in a cause. In October of 1837, Edward Partridge
wrote a letter to his brother stating that the government required 1000 natives
and approximately 150 to 200 white men to help put down the Seminoles in Florida.
Only a few of the Saints responded to this call from the government.
