Built almost
next door to the newly founded settlement of the Saints along the Wasatch
Front, Camp Floyd, near Fairfield, Utah, was the largest pre—Civil War military
base in the county in 1858. It was established by Col. Albert Sydney Johnston’s
3,000-man army sent to bring LDS settlers under government control. In 1985, a
BYU archaeological excavation team uncovered the foundations of three buildings
at the camp, yielding numerous artifacts including a large key, cannonballs,
pipe fragments, military buttons, percussion caps, shoulder boards, hairbrushes,
a toothbrush, knife handles, bottles, pitchers, cups, plates, and a Masonic
emblem. The Masonic emblem was the most significant find because Camp Floyd was
the site of the first Masonic lodge west of the Mississippi River.
