In Nauvoo
the members [Relief Society] helped build houses, provide food, make clothing,
and otherwise care for the sick and needy. In Utah, economic ventures were
undertaken by the women of the Church, with the Relief Society establishing
cooperative stores, developing silk-manufacturing industries, and arranging for
storage of many thousands of bushels of wheat. After the First World War,
President Woodrow Wilson, when visiting Utah, called upon Mrs. Emmeline B.
Wells, the general president of the Relief Society, to thank her for the wheat
given the federal government at the beginning of the war.
