Yesterday’s answer:
c. The Sacrament trays and vessels
In 1852 the
General Authorities wanted to obtain a special set of sacrament glasses and
plates for use in the Sunday afternoon downtown services. They asked members to
contribute silver from which to make sacrament vessels. Very quickly they
collected silver coin worth $149 and several pounds of silver watch cases,
spoons, rings, and other “ornaments.” The silver was melted down and then cast
by silversmith Israel Barlow to form twelve silver cups. Then in 1855, leaders
obtained “six new silver bread baskets.” In 1873, Salt Lakes City’s ninth ward
dedicated its “silver service for the communion table,” purchased with members’
donations. Provo wards spent more than four years trying to raise enough
through donations to buy a nice sacrament serving set for use in the Provo
Tabernacle.
