D Sharlene Wells
Sharlene
Wells (Hawkes), Miss America 1984, has the distinction of being the first and
possibly only person to stand proxy for the American flag during a formal
public pledge of allegiance. While attending a formal function in Arizona in
1986, the governor was about to lead everyone in the pledge of allegiance when
he suddenly discovered there was no flag to salute. So he quickly invited the
audience: “Will you please face Miss America and salute the flag.” The group
then stood, faced Hawkes, and recited the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
