Yesterday’s answer:
(D) The first marine bicycle
From the
Millennial Star of April 13, 1891: A
marine bicycle, the invention of an Ogden man, is being tested on the Great
Salt Lake. A local paper gives the following description of the new piece of
mechanism: “The body of the machine is made of two air-tight sheet iron tubes
fourteen feet long and eight inches in diameter, and forming a pointed prow at
one end, while the other is square. On this framework, which rests upon the
water, is built a deck and steering apparatus. In the center of the boat is a
mechanism much resembling a bicycle, which furnishes the motive power. The
person sits upon a regular saddle and turns the wheel with his feet. Twenty
paddles or water shovels give the required purchase and make the wheel resemble
those used on a side-wheel steamer. Besides the bicycle, a sail will be placed
on the forward deck which can be used in case of a high wind, or when the rider
it tired. A pair of oars will also be shipped for use when necessary. The
rudder is placed on the back end and will be turned by means of side ropes.”
